This week will be reviewing decimals. In sixth grade, students need to be able to add, subtract, multiply and divide decimals. Students will be reading a number of word problems and identify that proper operation that must be used. We will also be embedding algebra throughout the unit.
Homework this week is Castle Learning - Decimals Week One - and is due Friday, December 2nd. There is also a SchoolNet assignment - November Review (code: NovReview) which is due Friday, December 9th. The SchoolNet November Review will help prepare students for our next six week assessment which is on Friday, December 9th. The review covers all the skills which will be on the assessment with the exception of decimal operations. In science, we will dive into Learning set 4 this week. Learning Set 4 consists of sound and light energy. A pop quiz may be given this week on these two topics *hint* *hint*. Our six week in science will be December 13th.

https://play.kahoot.it/#/?quizId=f2c45d76-8301-422c-9306-d07610753902 Our unit test on multiplying and dividing fractions will be Friday, November 18th. Students will be given a study guide today in class that will be due on Wednesday. Today and Tuesday will consist of algebra with dividing fractions, a Schoolnet for Wednesday, followed by a review day of all the concepts on Thursday.
If your child is a student in my yellow block math class and you are interested in chaperoning for the field trip, please email me ASAP! Thank you! Our unit test on learning set 3 for thermal and chemical energy will be Friday, November 18th. Students will be given a study guide today in class that will be due on Thursday. Today we will talk about chemical change by performing various experiments. Tuesday we will talk about the factors of thermal energy followed by review days on Wednesday and Thursday. We have a short, three day week this week. For math, we will be reviewing the concept of dividing fractions through word problems. In science, students will continue to learn about the factors of thermal energy and how temperature and mass play a key role in determining the amount of thermal energy. Please check the gradebook to make sure you are not missing any assignments. A blank next to an assignment means it was not turned in and will eventually be marked down as a zero.
* October Review Schoolnet Lowden13 - November 14th * Fraction Test - November 18th * Learning Set 3 Science Test - November 18th In math, students will take an inequality quiz on Wednesday, November 2. They will review inequalities by doing a Schoolnet and castle learning in class on Tuesday. Algebra Week 3 Castle Learning is due Friday, November 4. We will start a new unit on fractions and decimals this week.
In science, students will have the Learning Set 2 energy test on Wednesday, November 2. They will review more for the test on Tuesday by playing Connect 4 as a class review game. On Thursday and Friday, we will begin Learning Set 3 (thermal and chemical energy) in our energy unit. The test will be the first formal grade of the second quarter. We will review for the test on Monday. Students will learn about inequalities this week, by writing if a variable is greater than, less than, or equal to a selected number.
In science, we will continue to talk about different types of energy transformations within a Rube Goldberg as well as continue our own Rube Goldberg designs. Students will also learn about what affects how much energy an object has as well as what factors determine the amount of kinetic energy of an object. A test on Learning Set 2 will be on Wednesday, November 2. Check PowerSchool to see if your child has any missing assignments. Assignments not turned in by Friday, October 28 will be marked as a zero in the gradebook. This week we will be learning the distributive property and how it is connected with algebra to write equivalent expressions. This is a new concept for many sixth graders, however it is closely connected to the array method of multiplication that students learned in elementary school. We will also be using factoring to write equivalent expressions which is the opposite of the distributive property.
Homework this week is Castle Learning - Combining Like Terms, and SchoolNet (lowden7). Many students finished both of these assignments on Monday during class, but students have until Friday to complete these activities. We will have a short quiz this Friday on the distributive property, factoring, and combining like terms. This will be our final formal grade of the first quarter. Our end of unit algebra test will be on Tuesday, October 25th, and will be the first grade of the second quarter. In science, we will continue to talk about the different types of energy and indicators that tell us when energy is taking place. On Wednesday, we will do a lab with radiometers to show us how light energy can affect different objects. The next day we will talk about thermal energy followed by kinetic and potential energy. Students will create their own Rube Goldberg with their group on Friday followed by a short quiz on Learning Set 1. We will start the week by taking our first six week assessment. This assessment will cover the skills that have been taught throughout the first six weeks of the school year. Students should be able to get their score immediately upon submission and will be able to review any questions from the assessment on Wednesday. This week will also be introducing substitution and combining like terms into our algebra unit.
With our six assessment on Monday and an abbreviated schedule on Wednesday, I am not assigning any new additional homework this week. However, students are responsible for having any previous SchoolNets and Castle Learnings completed by Friday. If you see any "blanks" in the grade book that means an assignment is missing and needs completed. We will take our six week assessment for science on Tuesday. The links to the Kahoots are posted below. Thursday, we will be beginning a new unit on energy and the different types of energy transformations. This week we will be connecting expressions to equations. In sixth grade, students are only required to be able to solve one-step equations, however, we will be focusing heavily on multi-step equations. We will be using basic written equations as well as word problems that connect algebra to the "real world".
Homework this week will be Castle Learning - Algebra Week Two, and SchoolNet - September Review (Lowden4) which was given last week. Both assignments need to be completed by Friday. Our first six week assessment will be Monday, October 10th. This will assess students on the skills we have learned up through equations from this school year. A great review strategy for this assessment is to review prior SchoolNets that we have completed in class. In science this week, students will learn about the states of matter as well as the properties of matter. We will also talk about physical and chemical changes and how density plays a major role in identifying unknown objects. Our first six week assessment will be Tuesday, October 11th. For review, students should study previous Kahoots and tests/quizzes. |
